The Student Experience

As a first–year student at ESG, you will experience:

Class sizes that range from 6 to 12 students

Dedicated and expert teachers from MIT's chemistry, physics, mathematics, and humanities departments who focus on how best to teach the GIR subject matter

Classes that are discussion–based whenever possible and, to the extent the material allows, interactive and hands–on

Instruction that adapts the learning pace and approach to the material, based on how you and your peers are grasping the subject matter

A classroom environment that encourages you to ask questions, interact with your instructor and classmates, and develop skills that prepare you for future MIT classes

Learning from your classmates as you discuss and solve problems together, both in and out of the classroom

The same material as in mainstream MIT classes, but in a smaller setting and with more attention to your individual learning style

Final projects that replace final exams in the GIRs, offering you the chance to apply your knowledge directly to projects of your own interest and design
