Advising

As a first–year student, you will be assigned to an ESG advising group, with a staff member as your advisor and an associate advisor who was a first–year student in ESG.

Your advisor will be your main support and advocate for anything related to academics and campus life. You will meet to discuss classes, how you are doing academically and emotionally, and your plans for the future.

Since your advisor’s office is located in the same space as your ESG classes, you will have easy access to your advisor and can stop by regularly to chat. Your advisor is there to listen, offer support, and help you determine your academic and personal goals at MIT. On outings with your advising group, you will get to know more about one another and the MIT environs.

Some ESG students opt to participate in a First–Year Advising Seminar (FAS) outside of ESG. If you choose to do so, your FAS instructor will become your primary advisor, and you will be assigned an ESG staff member as your secondary advisor.
